Professional Experience
Phil gained twenty-five years of progressively responsible experience in the Human Resources field. He provided Global leadership as Vice President Human Resources at Corel in his last role. As Senior Vice President of Central Services, Human Resources at CIBC Phil led a global, multi-functional, shared services team of HR professionals responsible for CIBC's Knowledge Network (leadership & training), Organizational Initiatives (organizational development), Executive Resourcing (talent management), Global Recruitment Strategies, and Human Resources Business Process Outsourcing. Phil sponsored the successful implementation of PeopleSoft across CIBC. He also headed the HR function of CIBC World Markets, Canada.
Prior to joining CIBC in 1994, Phil spent 11 years with Northern Telecom in global strategic and operational HR roles within North America and Europe. His last position at Northern Telecom was Director Organizational Development. Phil began his career in Human Resources with CAE Electronics in Montreal. He graduated from McGill University with a major degree in industrial relations and a minor in economics.
In the August 2006 publication of HR Professional magazine Phil was selected as one of 5 Stars of HR Innovation in Canada. He was the recipient of the Human Resource Professional Leadership Award 2005. An award made in recognition of a leading senior human resources professional contributing to the advancement of the Human Resources profession, through demonstration in their work of strong linkages between corporate strategies, HR initiatives, policies and procedures. In addition, consideration is given to participation in community volunteer activities and involvement in the Human Resource Professional Association of Ontario.
Phil was also honored with a 2004 Shared Services Leader Award. He is a founding board member of the Greater Toronto Human Resources Professional Association, a chapter of the HRPAO. He also was on the board of the York University Human Resources Advisory Council (in this capacity he also chaired the York University Human Resources Research Committee). He served on the York University Atkinson Management School Dean's Advisory Board. Phil is a guest lecturer for the Masters Human Resources Program at York University. He is active on the board of Career Edge and chairs the Human Resources Committee. This organization is a private sector not-for-profit organization that was launched in 1996 to provide internships for graduates of all disciplines, graduates with disabilities and international qualified professionals.
He also coached a competitive soccer team and competes in masters swimming and triathlon events.
